Twitter Is Still Reeling from Austin Butler’s Accent During His Golden Globes Speech

Who is more devoted to their role than Golden Globe winner Austin Butler?

Tonight, the actor won his first Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Dramatic Motion Picture, honouring his breakthrough performance as Elvis Presley in Baz Luhrmann's Elvis. While Butler gave a heartfelt acceptance speech in which he thanked his family, co-stars, and, of course, Elvis Presley himself, Twitter users could not help but notice that he was still speaking with the Southern accent he employs in the 2022 film.

Someone joked on Twitter, "I think it's so cool that Austin Butler underwent complete ego death for a Baz Luhrmann film." Another asked, "Why does Austin Butler sound like George W. Bush?"

According to Vulture writer Nate Jones, Butler addressed the commotion over his brand-new voice backstage. "I don't think I sound much like him, but I've heard it often enough that I suppose it's true," he reportedly said, comparing it to a person who acquires a new accent while living abroad. "It's now in my DNA."

Following are the most amusing Twitter responses to Butler's speech and new voice.
